Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), is a minimally invasive surgical treatment method for an enlarged prostate. The procedure uses a laser to remove tissue that is blocking urine flow through the prostate. After removing the prostatic tissues from their bed and throwing into the bladder, a separate instrument is inserted from the uerthra to cut the prostate tissue into easily removable fragments.
HoLEP is similar to open prostate surgery but requires no incisions. With this method, it is removed the entire portion of the prostate that can block urine flow. It can be a good option to treat a severely enlarged prostate. And it it can also be considered as a very good option for the patients who have bladder diathesis.
The treatment provides not only a long lasting solution for an enlarged prostate — a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but also preserves removed tissue so that it can be examined in the laboratory for other conditions, including prostate cancer. HoLEP offers faster recovery and symptom relief compared with traditional prostate surgery.
